It is hard to imagine Tom Hiddleston playing any other Marvel Cinematic Universe character other than Loki, but it turns out that when the studio held auditions for the first Thor back in 2009, he tried his hand at a different role.

E! News reports that the God of Mischief actor recently stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote his forthcoming Marvel show, Loki, coming to Disney+. In the video below, Hiddleston expresses his surprise and gratitude for having his own show, especially considering he had originally auditioned for the part of Thor.

“Basically, at the time, they were looking for sort of less well established actors so that the audience didn't have an association,” Hiddleston begins to explain. “They just wanted people to see these new characters, these new actors. And the ream it was, if you're over six foot and you've got blonde hair, you can come and have a pop at it. So, I never auditioned for Loki. I only ever auditioned for Thor, which is nuts.”

In a hilarious twist, Fallon reveals that he knew this fun fact, and that his “friends at Marvel” sent over Hiddleston’s audition tape. The 38-year-old actor was clearly embarrassed, but Fallon rolled the tape saying, “This has never been shown! This has never been released.”

The video, while a little cringe-worthy because of how well we know Hiddleston as Loki, isn’t actually too bad. He says his line, wields the hammer in a tight tank top and blonde wig, and runs towards the camera. After the audience erupts in applause, blushing Hiddleston states, “Thank you very much. You really are too kind,” adding, “I think we can all agree that they cast the right actor,” speaking about his co-star, Chris Hemsworth.

The audition is better than I expected, but I think the studio definitely made the right choice.
