'Supergirl' Star Melissa Benoist is Making Her Directorial Debut in Season 5

While DC Entertainment attempts to branch out their films with several different endeavors, the CW’s Supergirl has been working to expand the TV Arrowverse. This week, it emerged that there will also be new development on the creative end, with star Melissa Benoist making her directorial debut in Season 5.
Benoist told Entertainment Weekly (via CBR) that this debut has been in the works for some time. “I’ve been wanting to direct since season 3, but couldn’t last year because of scheduling conflicts, so [fellow star] David Harewood did it first,” she explained. “I just felt really drawn to it for a couple of seasons now, just because you know the show so well, and you get to know the character, and the world, and the tone of the show so well that you can’t help but envision certain scenes in a certain way. I want to play with that.”
Benoist also added that she would be shadowing a number of other directors on the show, including Tawnia McKiernan, who directed the episode that saw the debut of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer). Benoist’s episode will be episode 17 of Season 5, which takes place during the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover events.
“I’m literally trying to be a sponge, and I will learn something new every single day I’m shadowing,” Benoist said. “It’s all about compromising and trying to be as creative as you can within those boundaries, which is a cool challenge.”
As for us, we’re beyond excited to see Benoist’s directorial debut--she brings great energy to her role on screen, and we’re sure she’ll do the same behind the camera.
