The finale of Stranger Things Season 3 brought monumental changes for nearly every character--particularly for Max (Sadie Sink), who suffered the death of her stepbrother Billy (Dacre Montgomery). This week, however, Sink shared her own take on the finale, saying that she was confused over Max’s final scenes in the season.

Speaking with Teen Vogue (via Metro), Sink said that she was initially perplexed at the sudden jump from Billy’s death to seeming normalcy with the other protagonists in the season's conclusion. “That scene with [Max] and Billy at the end…obviously she’s just traumatized. But then it cuts to her three months later and she’s singing and happy with Lucas,” Sink recalled. “I remember reading that scene and I was like, “What’s going on? Wait. Did she not…Did her brother not just die?'”

Subsequently, however, Sink explained that she felt that the tonal change fit with the character. “I think it makes sense for her, because that’s kind of as messed up as their relationship was,” she said. “[Billy’s death] still really affects the dynamic within her family. But in true Max fashion, she’s not going to let anyone see how she’s really feeling at some points.”

“You see her just pretending that everything’s fine, when really, everything’s changed for her. She’s in a completely different emotional headspace,” Sink added.

While we were also initially a bit confused at the tonal shift ourselves, we think Sink’s explanation makes perfect sense--and we’re interested to see how Max’s emotional state develops with the future of Stranger Things.
