Black Panther achieved an unprecedented level of success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not only netting $1 billion at the box office but also pushing the mega-franchise forward with an acclaimed story about a character of color. For this reason, all eyes are on the studio for news about the sequel--and this week, star Martin Freeman revealed when thinks Black Panther 2 will begin filming.

In an interview with Uproxx, Freeman shared that, while he’s not completely certain about the filming date, he knows that it’s not exactly imminent. “The last I heard, we won’t be doing it next year,” he said. “So, it might be 2021 when we’re making the next Black Panther. That’s all I know."

Though Marvel officially announced Black Panther 2 at this year’s Comic-Con and revealed that director Ryan Coogler would be returning from the project, there has been little else in the way of information about the film. Presumably, star Chadwick Boseman will be returning to the role--along with Freeman, evidently.

In the meantime, Marvel Studios has shifted attention to its upcoming slate of Phase 4 films, including Black Widow, The Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Blade. Black Widow, a prequel film starring Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour, is slated to premiere first, in 2020.

Though we’re frothing at the mouth for more news about Black Panther 2, we understand Marvel’s desire to keep focus on their more imminent projects. Regardless, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any future news about the sequel.
