Game of Thrones is known for its epic histories, complex characters, and, of course, brutal death scenes. Though I’m sure a small, sadistic part of the showrunners loved to torture fans with surprising murders of our favorite characters, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff admit there is at least one death that they took too far.

CBR reports that the pair spoke at the Austin Film Festival this week, and were asked about the violence in some of the death scenes. Benioff admitted, “To be honest, we went too far with some of those,” and then commented particularly on the scene with Ser Hugh of the Vale in the Season 1 episode "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things."

As you might recall, Ser Hugh, the squire for the recently murdered Jon Arryn, is brutally killed in a jousting match with The Mountain. For no reason at all, he is shown slowly bleeding out with a shard sticking out from his severed throat. Benioff compared this moment to Ozark Season 1 when Jason Bateman's Marty has his toenail pulled out by a cartel boss.

Though the violence in this scene might have been a tad unnecessary, fans are pretty divided on what the most brutal death in GoT is. Some vote for the Red Wedding massacre (I sobbed well into the credits), the burning of Shireen Baratheon (ditto), Oberyn Martell having his head crushed by The Mountain, Arya getting her revenge on House Frey, or even Joffrey Lannister’s graphic choking.

One can only hope that Benioff was including all of these contenders when he said “some of those," otherwise, I am going to be pretty worried for the Star Wars universe when the duo takes on a galaxy far, far away in their new trilogy series.
