Zazie Beetz Says 'Joker' Was Rewritten While Shooting

We've all saw the awesome behind-the-scenes clips from the upcoming film Joker, which show Joaquin Phoenix terrorizing New York City subways in the full villain makeup and attire.

Turns out, there's a big chance that epic-looking scene was filmed shortly after the script was written. During an interview at the Sundance Film Festival, actress Zazie Beetz revealed the writers rewrote the movie as they were shooting it.

"We rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it," Beetz, who plays Sophie Dumond in the upcoming movie, told MTV News. "Literally, we would go into [director] Todd [Phillips]' trailer and then write the scene for the night and then do it."

"During hair and make-up, we'd memorize those lines and then do them, and then we'd reshoot that three weeks later," she continued. "We had to do everything then because Joaquin had lost so much weight that we couldn't do reshoots later on so we were figuring it out."

Talk about a fast working environment! Luckily, Phillips was well-prepared for all the reshoots. "Todd's quick at getting stuff done so we always had extra time, which was great" Beetz said.

As for further detail about the soon-to-be released DC film, all Beetz would reveal is that it'll be "gritty and dark."

Joker's expected theatrical release is Oct. 4, 2019.
