This week, the biggest Marvel Studios news since Comic-Con rocked the comic book movie world: following a conflict between Sony and Disney, Spider-Man will no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yesterday, star Tom Holland made his first Instagram post since the fallout--but it came as a surprise to some.

Per ComicBook.com, the photo shows Holland in the inside of a red sports car set against a sunny suburban backdrop, and bears the caption, “Every lads dream. Courtesy of @wiresonly. Thanks boss man.” It makes no mention of the ongoing dispute over his most iconic role.

Many fans took the Instagram post with a mixture of humor and distress, with users acknowledging the disparity between the seemingly cataclysmic announcement and Holland’s easygoing attitude. As one wrote on Twitter: “[Spider-Man] fans: *are stressed* Tom Holland: look at this fancy car I’m in that I can be in because I get paychecks & will still be getting paychecks y’all need to relax.”

The dispute between Sony and Disney, which became public yesterday, emerged after Sony rejected Disney’s proposal for a 50-50 deal on the financing of the film. Up until now, Disney has financed and earned 5% of the take from Spider-Man films, but does own the much more lucrative Spider-Man merchandise rights--meaning that Sony likely did not feel obliged to give up its stake in the successful property.

Although Holland’s Instagram post seems cavalier, it makes complete sense to us--it wouldn’t exactly be a smart career move for him to speak up against either Sony or Marvel right now.
