One of the biggest announcements to come out of Comic-Con 2019 was that of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Natalie Portman as Thor. The announcement generated considerable buzz around the film. And as new information comes out about it, Waititi has just revealed the official name of the new Thor.

Waititi’s reveal came, according to Bustle, after some fans responded negatively to Foster’s new role, calling her “female Thor” in comparison to Chris Hemsworth’s “Thor.” In response to one Twitter user who commented on this trend, Waititi said, “Correction. She's called Mighty Thor.”

These comments cement the storyline’s connection to the Marvel Comics series Mighty Thor, written by Jason Aaron, which sees Jane Foster take up the hammer of Thor during a period where the original Thor was unworthy of wielding his powers.

Until recently, Portman and her character, Jane Foster, have been on the back-burner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being mentioned sporadically until a surprise reappearance in a time travel sequence in Avengers: Endgame. Love and Thunder, then, will represent a return to prominence for both Waititi, who directed the acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok, and Portman.

While there haven’t been many details so far beyond the concept, we’re beyond excited for the appearance of Natalie Portman as Thor--and we’re glad that Waititi is taking such a strong stand behind the change.
