A brand new theory has emerged while we all patiently wait for the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as an editor at Inverse has thought up something intriguing about Rey’s real parents.

Jake Kleinman explains that in a 2018 comic published by Marvel (“Darth Vader #25”), Anakin has a flashback in which he watches Emperor Palpatine use the Force to impregnate Shmi, Anakin’s mother, making Palpatine his father. The theory then goes on to argue that Rey’s parents were likely “filthy junk traders” as Kylo Ren said, but that Palpatine was actually responsible for her conception. The editor believes that Palpatine was trying to make another disciple who he believed he could control more easily than Anakin. This would explain how a “nobody” could have powers strong enough to match up to Kylo Ren and Snoke.

If this is the case, Rey would technically be Anakin’s half-sister and Luke’s aunt via immaculate conception. Creepy, right? Kleinman’s theory connects Rey to the Skywalkers in a poetic and insidious way, paralleling her character to that of Anakin, while also confirming her place in the family tree.

Palpatine will be making a return in The Rise of Skywalker, which hits theaters on Dec. 20. We’ll have to wait and see whether this theory is even remotely true, or if Rey’s parents truly were nobodies.
