When Marvel Studios set out on their search for the next actor to play Spider-Man, they went far and wide to find the perfect actor. Though they eventually settled on Tom Holland, their quest stirred up a number of young actors to audition for the part--and recently, Riverdale star KJ Apa revealed that he was one of them.

Apa shared the truth behind his audition during an interview with MTV News at this past weekend's San Diego Comic-Con. When asked if the Riverdale cast had ever gone for the part of any superheroes, Apa, in good humor, revealed, “I auditioned for Spider-Man...I didn’t get it.” He added, “Sometimes I walk out of an audition — you know when you walk out and you feel really good about it, feel like they loved it or whatever? I didn’t feel like that.”

Subsequently, Holland won the role after a rigorous five-step audition process (and later discovered that he had won the role via Instagram).

Thankfully for Apa, he soon landed a spot on Riverdale, which premiered several months after Holland’s debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Since, Apa has appeared in films including The Hate U Give and The Last Summer.

While we would’ve been fascinated to see what a KJ Apa-Spider-Man would look like, we’re glad that Holland eventually got the role--and that Apa got to find his star in Riverdale.
