A new Reddit theory is explaining how Captain America might've accidentally turned his future self into a Hydra agent in Avengers: Endgame.

User ConstantCompile recalls the scene when Cap travels back to 2012 in the latest Avengers film and fights Captain America in the elevator, and whispers "Hail Hydra" to an elevator full of Hydra agents. This could've had a lasting effect on himself.

The theorist argues, "The specifics of the scepter are never explained, but in Avengers 2012, Loki uses the scepter to mind-control Hawkeye into doing his bidding. So now we have 2012 Cap knocked out on the floor, having just been mind-scrambled by the scepter and probably highly susceptible to influence. This, they believe, means Cap may have altered his own future just by mentioning the two words "Hail Hydra."

"Steve Rogers' knowledge of the mechanics of the scepter is likely fuzzy at best. It's entirely possible that hitting 2012 Cap with it could have resulted in dire unforeseen consequences," the Redditor adds.

After present day Cap returns, the Hydra agents from earlier have full access to the then-vulnerable Captain America. Disney could potentially take this storyline and run with the very secret empire story arc, as the Reddit user points out.

Many fans on Reddit commented on the theory saying the narrative is highly possible and would make for a very interesting follow-up, however some weren't so sure. It's also worth noting that Chris Evans seems very much done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so we shouldn't hold our breath to see him reprise his role--in any capacity.
