Though director Todd Phillips’ upcoming film Joker doesn’t come out in theaters for another month, there is at least one thing about it we know for sure: it isn’t like other comic book movies.

Actually, Phillips has said it isn’t really a comic book movie, but rather an iteration of a character. Instead of following the long and lengthy history of the villain once again, Phillips decided to go another route; he wanted to tell the complex story of a man’s descent into madness.

And with the help of Joaquin Phoenix, that man, Arthur Fleck, was brought to life in such a way that the film is already generating Oscar buzz. Apparently, it has broken so many molds that even people who detest the genre of comic book films love the movie.

ComicBook.com reports that Joker producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff spoke to Associated Press before the film's recent premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The veteran producer admitted that superhero flicks are not her thing. “It’s not my preferred genre, the comic book genre," Koskoff said. "I literally can’t watch those movies. I try but I can’t. I should but I can’t.”

But with Joker, she has found an almost Shakespearean alternative that she can actually enjoy. Koskoff continued in the interview, “But I love this movie. Even if I didn’t work on this movie I would love this movie."

Koskoff isn’t the only one. We can’t wait to join those raving about it when the film hits theaters Oct. 4.
