The DC Extended Universe exists in a state of flux at the moment, with Ben Affleck departing as Batman and other films existing in a state of uncertainty--including the cinematic future of Henry Cavill as Superman. However, if one report from Comic-Con 2019 is to be believed, Cavill wishes to make some kind of return to the franchise.

The report, according to ComicBook.com, comes from Twitter and Instagram user Roger Roeken, who shared a photo of himself and Cavill at San Diego Comic-Con and shared details of their conversation, saying that Cavill expressed he would want to return to the role of Superman in a theoretical sequel.

Roeken subsequently released a statement on Twitter saying that Cavill had expressed no ill will towards Warner Bros. and that they had simply been talking in hypothetical statements about another Man of Steel film.

Last year, reports claimed that Warner Bros. was ending Cavill’s tenure as Superman; later indications suggested that his role in the franchise was stunted after difficult negotiations for the character’s appearance in Shazam! (with the film featuring a faceless cameo of the character). According to CinemaBlend, the most recent reports indicate that Warner Bros. has no plans for the character, leaving Cavill’s status uncertain. In the meantime, the actor will appear in an upcoming adaptation of the The Witcher book and video game series for Netflix.

While it’s difficult to parse between casual conversation and real news, we’ll keep on watching this event--we know that we’re interested to see where DC takes the Man of Steel and his film franchise next.
