Although fans of the original Harry Potter book series are familiar with Albus Dumbledore's past, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them gives our first onscreen look at a younger version of the eventual Head of Hogwarts.

Author J.K. Rowling has explained why Dumbledore has such a poignant attraction to Newt Scamander's energy. Jude Law, who plays Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts series, said that Rowling revealed this reasoning to him during filming.

"This is something Jo Rowling said to me. The reason he loves Newt is that Newt loves beasts and I think he thinks he's a beast," the Sherlock Holmes actor shared. "I think he thinks he's dark, that he's seen and done things that he wishes he hadn't and he's constantly pulling himself back on the right moral side."

A large portion of Newt's character is based on this connection and love for other living things, especially beasts shunned by the rest of society. Given Albus' dark backstory, the negative effect his actions seemed to have on his self-esteem isn't surprising. Newt's respect and love for all living things, regardless of their actions or what society thinks of them, appeals to the part of Dumbledore that believes he is not deserving of love based on his actions.

The Crimes of Grindelwald was released in Nov. 2018, with a third movie in the series planning to be released in 2020. We can't wait to see what other characters we get this in-depth of looks at.
