Bill Maher Attacks Comic Book Fans Again in New Rant

Stan Lee's death in November saddened the millions of Marvel fans around the globe. Tributes poured in by individuals from all walks of life to honor the comic book icon.

However, not everyone paid their respects. Political commentator Bill Maher went on a bizarre rant in a blog post following Lee's death, attacking comic book fans who were in mourning and even blamed them for Donald Trump's election.

“The problem is, we’re using our smarts on stupid stuff. I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important," Maher penned in the post.

Obviously, his comments did not go over well with the Marvel faithful. Many fans Maher called out for being a hypocrite because he actually appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, with 2013's Iron Man 3.

But despite the massive controversy the comedian instigated, he's not even close to apologizing. On Friday's episode of his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, he doubled down on his past comments and once again went after comic book enthusiasts.

During the closing segment of the show, Maher claimed the blog post wasn't disrespectful to Lee in any way, but rather, "took the occasion of his death to express my dismay at people who think comic books are literature and superhero movies are great cinema and who, in general, are stuck in an everlasting childhood."

"Bragging that you're all about the Marvel Universe is like boasting your mother still pins your mittens to your sleeves," Maher continued. "You can, if you want, like the exact same things you liked when you were 10. But if you do, you need to grow up. That was the point of my blog. I'm not glad Stan Lee is dead, I'm sad you're alive."

Maher said he wasn't aware he "ruffled so many capes" until he lost 40k Twitter followers, who he says he's proud to lose. As the show's audience cheered him on, the comedian continued by calling comic book film adaptations simplistic.

"Every superhero movie is the same thing: a person who doesn't have powers, gets them, has to figure out how they work, and then has to find a glowy thing," he said.

Maher's statements are obviously egregious, but at this point, it's clear he's not going to take anything back. So we're all better off ignoring his obvious quest for attention instead of waiting for an apology.
