Why You Can't Wear 'Star Wars' Costumes at Galaxy's Edge
By Ryan Carroll

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland has finally opened, and first impressions seem to indicate that, in keeping with Disney’s high quality style, the attraction lives up to its potential. For all the Star Wars-themed rides, items, and atmosphere, however, there is one restriction: guests may buy Jedi robes and other paraphernalia, but they may not wear them.
Though Galaxy’s Edge has a wide variety of authentic Star Wars apparel available, including robes and other outfits, guests over the age of 14 may not wear them. According to CNBC, this restriction is in place so that guests will not be confused for park employees, most of whom will be dressed in Star Wars clothing--and since the employees will already be wearing different kinds of clothing, the park does not want to add any additional difficulty in identifying them.

This policy is markedly different from the policy in parks such as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, where guests may freely wear Hogwarts robes and other Harry Potter clothing. Disney Parks, on the other hand, do not permit guests to wear Disney costumes--though, according to CNBC, they do encourage “DisneyBounding,” the creation of ordinary outfits inspired by Disney characters.
Notably, however, some guests have said that some park staff are relatively lax on the policy. Jenny Nicholson, a YouTuber and self-described Disney Parks enthusiast, reported that, “I experimented with wearing my Jedi robes all day today and walked near a lot of managers and security, and nobody’s enforcing the no-Jedi-robes rule.” In other cases, however, users have reported that park staff initially give gentle warnings and then politely ask for costumes to be removed.

Ultimately, even despite the costume restriction, we’re excited to experience what it’s like inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge--even if we can’t don every Star Wars item we own.
