What 'The Punisher' Star Jon Bernthal and Executive Producers Are Saying About Possible Cancellation

Fans of Netflix's Marvel TV series have not been happy in recent months. First, both Iron First and fan-favorite Luke Cage were cancelled without any warning, in the span of one week. Then, the critically acclaimed series Daredevil was next, to many fans' dismay. Now, the only shows remaining are Jessica Jones and The Punisher, as Netflix has all but confirmed The Defenders will not be returning for Season 2. And with The Punisher's second season debuting last week, fans are wondering what's in store for its future.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Punisher executive producers Steve Lightfoot and Jeph Loeb spoke of Season 2 and the possibility of the show getting cancelled. "We would love [a third season], and nothing would make us happier than to work with those talented writers and crew," Loeb stated. "As I have repeatedly said, it is not our decision. We are ready to go and would love to do so. It is Netflix’s call to make."

"We were finished before any of this started happening," Lightfoot explained regarding the wave of cancellations. "I left [season 2] on that final shot that was just meant to [make people go], 'Wow, I can’t wait to see season 3.' That was it. That was what I want them to take away, and it’s like any show — if you’ve been in this business long enough, we’ve all worked on shows that got canceled that you wish hadn’t."

Lightfoot and Loeb's comments echo The Punisher star Jon Bernthal's, as the actor recently said on the possibility of a cancellation, "Yeah, it’s gonna be what it’s gonna be. I get it. You know what I know. Part of the deal with this profession is that you can make a choice and worry about the s**t that you can’t control, or you can worry about the s**t that you can."

It seems while everyone will be heartbroken if The Punisher gets the axe, it will both be unsurprising, and ultimately alright for the guys behind it.
