Tobey Maguire Weighs in on 'Spider-Man' Films After His Portrayal

Tom Holland receives plenty of praise for his role as Peter Parker, but it's important to acknowledge the actor who paved the way for a live-action Spider-Man on the big screen.
Tobey Maguire played the wall crawler in the franchise's first theatrical live-action film in 2002's Spider-Man. Maguire's performance received critical acclaim and the film was the first-ever to reach $100 million in a single weekend.
Maguire appeared in the installment's two sequels, all of which were box office successes. The franchise was rebooted in 2012, with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. In 2015, Marvel Studios added the popular superhero to its cinematic universe, with Holland's debut performance coming in Avengers: Civil War.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Maguire praised Holland and Garfield for their performances as the Queens-native.
"What I've seen, I've appreciated. I like both of the actors a ton," Maguire said, though he mentioned he hasn't seen all of the Spider-Man movies. "I think they're both super talented. I would just say I appreciated them and I like the actors. I like the choices."
The debate over who's the best Spider-Man actor has become commonplace on social media.
But despite the arguments among the Marvel fandom, the three actors have had nothing but commendation for one another. In a 2015 interview, Garfield called Holland a "really, really great actor."
"He's just this incredibly powerful, sensitive.. wonderful young actor. I'm just really excited to be a fan again as opposed to barring the weight to it," Garfield said.
In 2016, Maguire posted on Instagram that he thought Holland was “great as Spider-Man.” And during a press tour interview for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland called both Maguire and Garfield "very nice guys."
Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker this year in Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far from Home, out in theaters on April 26 and July 5, respectively.
