The Hall of Faces in 'Game of Thrones' Actually Belong to the Show's Production Crew

The anticipation for the final season of Game of Thrones is arguably the highest for any show ever, as we get to see our most beloved—and most hated—characters come together one last time on our screens. And apart from storylines and characters meeting their ends, fans are excited to see how well put together the eighth season is, considering its insanely high budget.

According to Variety, the final six episodes of GoT cost $15 million each to produce, making it one of the most expensive shows to date. And although it’s taken a large budget all along to make a show as massive as Thrones, the showrunners have had to compromise in the past to save some cash.
The Hall of Faces is a perfect example of cutting costs, showrunner D. B. Weiss once revealed. Instead of making tons of masks, they used members of the production crew’s faces and simply made copies.
“You need enough faces that you don’t sense the repeats, but you obviously can’t face cast thousands and thousands of people because that’s prohibitively expensive,” Weiss shared. “We used all the face molds we have ever used before. Both [series co-creator] David [Benioff] and myself appeared many, many times in the Hall of Faces… there is at least 20 or 30 of me in there, which is, I suppose, my cameo for the show.”
We probably wouldn’t be able to recognize any of the faces, but it could be something to look out for to as we obsessively rewatch the series. Game of Thrones returns for its final season in April 2019.
