One of the things that’s made the Star Wars sequel trilogy so compelling is their persistent planting of long-term mysteries, in keeping with J.J. Abrams’ famous mystery box style of storytelling. Few compare to that of Supreme Leader Snoke, the compelling villain of The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, who was killed off in the latter film without any backstory being offered. This week, however, it emerged that Snoke’s background will be revealed, albeit briefly, in a new Star Wars comic book miniseries from Marvel.

According to Gizmodo, the miniseries, entitled Age of Resistance, is the third in a series of anthologies exploring stories from the Old Republic, Empire, and New Republic eras of Star Wars history. Written by Tom Taylor with art by Ramon Rosanas and Leonard Kirk, the Snoke-centric issue will explore the character's early efforts at seducing Ben Solo (later Kylo Ren) to the dark side.

The description for the issue reads: "Supreme Leader Snoke’s brutal training of Kylo Ren begins. Will the sadistic Snoke break his tormented protégé? Or has he underestimated the son of Han and Leia?"

Other one-shot issues will explore characters including Poe Dameron, Captain Phasma, Admiral Hux, Finn, Rey, and Kylo Ren himself, with each depicting events before or around the time of the sequel films. Rey’s, for example, will showcase the character’s first meeting with Princess Leia, while Kylo Ren’s will see him grappling with the spectre of Anakin Skywalker.

While it isn’t exactly a comprehensive backstory to Snoke, we’re still excited to get a glimpse of the character’s upbringing when the issue is released--and to read the entire series, which begins with a Finn-centric issue in July.
