'Shazam!' Director Explains Why He Probably Won't Be Doing a Sequel

Although the DC Extended Universe has been the subject of serious backlash over the years, the future of their films looks pretty positive. Besides Wonder Woman and its upcoming sequel, newly-released Aquaman is doing great at the box office. The James Wan-helmed film made a reported $67.4 million during its opening weekend in the U.S.

The highly-anticipated film has been met with generally positive reviews and is clearly making major cash, so it's been surprising to fans to hear that Wan is not totally sold on making a sequel. And it appears he's not the only DC director who feels that way.
This past weekend, Shazam! director David F. Sandberg took to Twitter to explain why he probably won't be doing a sequel. Although the comedic DC film doesn't hit theaters until April 2019, he's already thinking about taking a step back from the superhero world.
When a fan expressed disappointment in both Wan and Sandberg for saying they wanted to take a break from comic book movies after their respective films, the director responded by reflecting on the "crazy amount of work" he had to do for Shazam!
"It's like asking a runner at the end of a marathon if they feel like doing another one," Sandberg explained.
It’s just that it takes a crazy amount of work to do a movie like this. It’s like asking a runner at the end of a marathon if they feel like doing another one. You need some time to rest and forget how difficult it was. https://t.co/FMfOZwgJAk

As for Wan, he's expressed somewhat similar sentiments, explaining to ComicBook.com that he's "a little bit superhero-ed out." He compared the experience to making horror films, the genre which skyrocketed him to fame, sharing, "If I spend too long doing horror films, I get really horror-ed out ... I'm always trying to find new things to sort of challenge me, and that's what it comes down to."
We'll see if Wan or Sandberg change their minds, especially if the latter's film does as well as Aquaman is doing at the box office. Here's to hoping both films get sequels at all!
