Game of Thrones' final season received an immense amount of fan criticism. Though the show had been a cultural sensation for eight years, many were vocally livid about the conclusion of some of their favorite characters, even going so far as to petition for another season to be filmed with "competent writers."

GoT stars such as Sophie Turner have spoken out about the criticism, calling it "disrespectful" to the creators, cast, and crew. And she is not alone. It seems that the series' creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have found some otherworldly allies to defend their work.

Entertainment Weekly asked Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland what they thought about the final season of GoT, to which they offered some appreciative thoughts and burned the fans in the process.

Harmon explained that he didn’t want the show to end, but that he was impressed with how Weiss and Benioff fit so much into the last season. “As a showrunner, I was amazed at the amount they were able to accomplish — especially given the meta-reality of having run out of books to adapt," he shared. "Watching The Hound fight The Mountain on the stairs, I was like, ‘This is all great, man.’ I was aware of the disappointment factor with [Daenerys Targaryen’s] dark turn. I’m not going to say fans are too cynical and ungrateful, but I guess I did just say that.”

Roiland agreed with Harmon’s thoughts about the fans. “I echo all of Dan’s sentiments about the show,” he said. “Structurally, I think it was great. I just selfishly wanted more episodes. I wanted to get to those plot points at a slower pace. I didn’t want it to end either. I wished it was stepped out over three more seasons, or three of four more episodes.”

Roiland and Harmon agreed that there will never be another show like GoT. Roiland stated, “That show was a phenomenon. It was insanely big. Everybody was watching it. And I love [GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss], they’re f—ing awesome guys.”

I wonder if Roiland and Harmon will make any GoT references in the fourth season of Rick and Morty, returning to Adult Swim in November after a two-year break.
