Richard Madden Wins at Golden Globes for 'Bodyguard' Following 'Game of Thrones' Fame

Although Game of Thrones fans everywhere were devastated when Robb Stark died in the very emotional - and very violent - Red Wedding back in Season 3, the actor who played the character, Richard Madden, has gone on to only improve his acting repertoire.

The 32-year-old actor stars in the BBC Drama Bodyguard, which follows the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Madden plays David Budd, a war veteran with PTSD who is working as a Protection Command bodyguard. The six-part series debuted in Aug. 2018, and ended in September.

While the series has been short, it's also garnered critical acclaim, namely for Madden's portrayal. And his talent did not go unrecognized at last night's Golden Globes, where he won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Television Series. This marks Madden's first Golden Globe nomination as well as his first win.

"Thank you very much to HFPA. I didn't see this coming at all," Madden said in his acceptance speech. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the amazing crew and cast that made Bodyguard that worked very hard over the course of five months to make this show."

"And most importantly, my friends and my family and mom and dad who flew all the way from Scotland. I wouldn't be here without you," Madden sweetly added.

Although Madden will not be making an appearance in the final season of Game of Thrones, he does have a bold prediction for the series' end. "I kind of think it’s just going to be three dragons flying around and everyone else is dead," he told The Hollywood Reporter last month. "It’s a possibility!"

A second season of Bodyguard has not been greenlit yet, but you can catch GoT for its eighth and final season this April.
