Since the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, many fans have been shipping the characters of Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega), and it turns out they're hardly the only ones.

Variety reports that Isaac recently attended their press junket for The Rise of Skywalker and shared that he wanted the relationship between Poe and Finn to go to the next level romantically. He explained:

“Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control. It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.”

The Golden Globe winner admitted that the “ambiguity” of the bond now might leave more room for people to identify with the pair, adding, “But if they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun.”

Though we won’t see a romance bloom between Finn and Poe in the final chapter to the 42-year-old saga, we could still see LBGTQ+ representation in the film. Director J.J. Abrams stated in the junket that he has always worked to have a cast that looks “more the way the world looks than not,” adding, “And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film.”

When Variety asked him if this meant there was going to be a queer character in the movie, Abrams smiled and said, “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”

We can’t wait to see what surprises The Rise of Skywalker has in store (and more cute Finn and Poe moments) when the film hits theaters on Dec. 20.
