Original Spider-Man Tobey Maguire Almost Reprised Role for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'

When most think of Spider-Man, they picture Tobey Maguire, who played Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy of the 2000s.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, a new animated film which hits theaters Dec. 14, showcases a washed up Peter Parker who attempts to aid 13-year-old Miles Morales, an alternate-universe Spider-Man.

When asked if there was any consideration about casting Maguire as the voice of the older Peter Parker in the new film, director Rodney Rothman revealed to Screen Crush that, in fact, “there was.”

“There were many thoughts about where we could put Tobey Maguire and others,” Rothman said.

While the inclusion of Maguire would have been a big deal to many fans, the role instead went to actor Jake Johnson. But even though the Spider-Man veteran is not featured in this animated film, the directors haven’t ruled out his inclusion in future projects.

“I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction. But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the Spider-Verse to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people,” Rothman said. “But wow, it would have been fun.”

It’s very possible that Maguire has a role in a sequel, which is rumored to already be in the works. It is the Spider-Verse, after all, where there is no limit to the number of crossovers that could be created.
