Old Video of Ariana Grande Saying 'Thank U, Next' Proves She's Been Preparing the Song for Years

“Thank you, next” seems to be the phrase of 2018, but a recently resurfaced video of Ariana Grande shows that the singer has actually been saying it since at least 2015.

The video in question is a Vanity Fair interview with the Scream Queens cast, in which Ari appears alongside Abigail Breslin, Billie Lourd, and Emma Roberts.

In the interview, rediscovered by Elite Daily, the girls are watching classic on-screen scream scenes. At one point, when Ari has said all she needs to say about the film I Know What You Did Last Summer, she calls out “thank you, next!” to cue the next scene.

Has Ariana been planning to make this song for three years? Or is it just a phrase she's used for a while? Surprised fans have been speculating both possibilities.

Though only two seasons of Scream Queens were made, Ari appeared in a handful of episodes. The series' creator Ryan Murphy explained to E! News how he landed as big a star as Ariana.

“Here's the thing: When you tell somebody, ‘I love you. I have always loved your work and I want to show people a different side of you,' it's sort of an interesting thing that in my case I've been very lucky where they're like ‘OK,'” Murphy explained. “That's what happened with Ariana. But, well, actually the truth is she was just obsessed with American Horror Story, like she was obsessed, so I think she just met me to ask questions about the new season to be honest!! [laughs] I really do.”

Whether Ariana has been saving this for a hit song since 2015 or not, we're thankful that the song is a smash.
