Millie Bobby Brown Sparks Controversy Defending Penn Badgley's Character in 'You'

It turns out Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown is just like us: she too likes to binge-watch shows on Netflix and share her opinions about them on social media. We love that Millie is so relatable, but unfortunately a recent opinion about the Lifetime series You has landed the actress in a bit of hot water.

The opinion revolves around Penn Badgely’s character, Joe Goldberg, who stalks and murders people in attempts to get a girl to love him. In a now-deleted Instagram Story, Millie stated she disagrees with claims that Joe is a bad guy.

"So I just started that new show You... He's not creepy, he's in love with her and it's okay... By the way, I know everybody is gonna say 'Ahhh, he's a stalker, why would you support that?!' But like, he's in love with her... just watch the show and don't judge me on my opinion," Millie said.

But of course, this is the internet and people are judging the 14-year-old actress’ opinion.

Though actor Penn Badgley didn't talk to Brown directly (that we know of), he did take to Twitter to try and help fans realize Joe’s actions are extremely problematic and not at all romantic.

You is trying to show fans that going to great lengths for someone you love doesn’t necessarily make you the love of his or her life, but instead could actually make you dangerous. In the past, many movies such as There’s Something About Mary have romanticized these actions and gave viewers toxic ideas about love.

Millie is just like the young viewers You is trying to reach. While we love that she keeps it real with her fans, we hope she realizes that Joe’s behavior is downright scary, instead of romantic.
