Meghan Markle Reacts to Beyoncé and Jay-Z's Portrait Tribute

Earlier this year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z paid tribute to Meghan Markle by accepting a BRIT Award in front of a regal portrait of the Duchess, and posting photos of the event to Instagram. Though we didn’t know Markle’s reaction at the time, a new interview has revealed how she felt about the tribute--and suffice to say, she was excited.

According to Cosmopolitan, Markle’s longtime friend and makeup artist, Daniel Martin, revealed that the star was surprised and excited to be featured on Beyoncé’s Instagram, though even he was coy with the details.

"I sent her a pic—I think it was a screen grab of the two of them in front of the portrait,” he said, referring to one of Beyoncé’s three photos of the portrait. “I think all I wrote was, 'Girl.' She wrote me back, like, the big eye emoji.”

Martin didn’t clarify which specific eye emoji Markle used, so it’s possible she used any of a variety of possibilities. While it’s certainly not the starstruck reaction that everyone might have had, Markle’s terseness likely comes from her delicate status as a royal in the public eye.

And, of course, Martin could simply be understating his friend’s reaction, not wanting to embroil her in any scandal so soon after the birth of her child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, who was born on May 6.

Regardless, Markle’s excited reaction speaks to a basic truth: no matter how prestigious you are, you always have respect for Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
