Sex Trafficking Survivor Alexis Martin Gets Prison Sentence Commuted After Kim Kardashian Rallies for Her Justice

In recent years, Kim Kardashian has been using her influence to help reform the criminal justice system in the United States. Her fight all began with Alice Marie Johnson, helping her get released from prison in 2018 after she was sentenced to life for non-violent drug charges. The reality star highlights cases she believes deserve a second look in her Oxygen documentary Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project, an hour-and-a-half long special where Kim sheds some light on America’s growing problem with mass incarceration.
"What I wanted to do with this documentary is take people along with my journey, how I started off with Alice, non-violent drug offender, to going into people that have done some really serious crimes," the star told CBS. One of those cases was that of 22-year old Alexis Martin, a sex trafficking survivor who was convicted of plotting a robbery that resulted in the death of the man who trafficked her.
According to the Miami Herald, Alexis was just 17 when she was sentenced to life in prison. Kim's efforts, along with lawyers working on the case, have thankfully led to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine commuting Alexis Martin's sentence. The mom-of-four applauded Governor DeWine's decision on Twitter.
Alexis Martin is a sex traffic survivor and I was honored to be able to share her story on the Justice Project. Thank you Governor DeWine for commuting her sentence. ?? @GovMikeDeWine

According to the Daily Mail, the Ohio governor explained, "The facts of [Martin's] case are particularly, particularly unique," and announced that Martin would be released to supervision at a group home. During her time in prison, Martin received her GED and started mentoring other sexual trafficking survivors.
Congratulations to Alexis Martin for having her sentence commuted.
