The Golden Globes announced their nominations today for the 2020 ceremony, and while things didn’t go so well for some fan-favorites, Joker has proved to have had impressed fans and critics alike.

The Todd Phillips-directed film received four nominations for its gritty, mind-blowing portrayal of DC Comics' favorite villain. The four nods include: Best Motion Picture -- Drama, Best Director (Todd Phillips), Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama (Joaquin Phoenix), and Best Original Score (Hildur Guonadóttir).

Though the movie, which grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its Oct. 4 release, has been buzzing in terms of nominations in almost every category, the film was ultimately snubbed for Best Original Screenplay. However, many believe Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck will win him both a Golden Globe and an Oscar.

Beyond nominations, there is no denying that the film was a colossal success. Not only did it break the worldwide record for the highest-grossing R-rated film, but it did so with a controversial start. When Joker was first released, many criticized the violence in the movie, saying it was tone-deaf to the gun violence issues in America.

Despite these difficulties, fans ultimately resonated with the storyline and the character of Fleck, a mentally ill man struggling through poverty, bullying, and abuse until he descends into his role as the Joker.

Needless to say, the four Golden Globe nominations are just the beginning for this movie.
