Instead of turning to Pottermore or Twitter, J.K. Rowling has now gone on film to discuss some non-cannon facts about Dumbledore. In the new Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald DVD featurette, Rowling shared some insight about Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s romantic relationship.

So far the only thing we explicitly know about them is that Dumbledore did have feelings for Grindelwald in the past. But now in the new featurette, the Harry Potter author has opened up about how their relationship really went down, according to Hypable.

She revealed there was a “sexual dimension” to their relationship, and reiterated it was romantic.

“Their relationship was incredibly intense,” she stated. “It was passionate. And it was a love relationship. But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know. You can believe you know. So I’m less interested in the sexual side, though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship, than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships.”

Up until this point we knew of Dumbledore’s feelings but what we did not know for sure is that Grindelwald had them as. While both wizards are extremely powerful, maybe this is what drew them together?

It’s interesting to keep in mind even if it doesn't go to cannon in the next couple of Fantastic Beasts movies, but what we can count on is an eventual showdown between the two ex-lovers.
