How Did Nick Fury Lose His Eye? Fans Are Angry at 'Captain Marvel' Reveal

Nick Fury is one of the most intense characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and what adds to his intimidation is the eye patch covering his missing left eye.

After Fury told Steve Rodgers, “Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye,” in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the character's eye patch and its backstory has been subject to multiple theories.

A year before the recent release of Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Fury, hinted at the film revealing the reason behind his missing eye. And the film, which grossed has over $153 million domestically during its opening weekend, did just that.

However, the reason why the iconic eye patch came to be has many fans shaking their heads. If you haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, we must warn you: Spoilers Ahead.

Fury, legendary S.H.I.E.L.D member and fan-favorite, lost his eye because of a cat. We're not joking. Throughout Captain Marvel, Fury is seen bonding with Goose, the cat he discovers in the archives of Project Pegasus. However, Goose is actually an alien, called a "Flerken," who, for whatever reason, has affection for Nick.

At one point in the film, Goose doesn't appreciate the way Fury is handling him, causing the Flerken to scratch Fury right across the eye. Fans were far from happy with this being the big reveal.

Other fans flat-out couldn't believe the revelation.

Some fans, however, see the humor in a cat causing Nick to wear an eye patch for the rest of his life.

We get that Marvel likes incorporating comedy into their projects because watching a film with dozens of deaths without some humor would be depressing. However, Goose the cat/alien being the reason Nick loses his eye feels like the film replacing a possible intense backstory for a cheap laugh.
