Though Game of Thrones has endured considerable criticism and controversy for its conclusion, it has nonetheless maintained its status as a landmark series for HBO. This reputation was solidified this week at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, where Game of Thrones nabbed the award for Best TV Show.

The award, according to SyFy, was first presented to actor Jacob Anderson, who played Grey Worm, on the red carpet before the ceremony itself. “A lot of amazing people work on Game of Thrones, so I feel weird being the one to hold this, but I've always wanted to hold one of these," Anderson said. "So, congratulations to everybody, all the people I love on the show, who have worked incredibly hard, you will get to touch this. Cast and crew, and everybody who's amazing, we did it!"

The Twitter account for the award show also tweeted a congratulation to the show’s creators before it actually aired, according to ComicBook.com, likely owing to the fact that the awards show is pre-taped and then aired a day later.

Game of Thrones competed in the category against Schitt’s Creek, Big Mouth, Riverdale, and The Haunting of Hill House. Last year’s winner Stranger Things was not nominated, according to ComicBook.com, as it did not air any new episodes in between the 2018 awards and last night’s ceremony (though it will premiere for a third season on July 4). While the nominees for each category are determined by MTV executives, the awards themselves are ultimately given based on the results of an online poll of the general public.

Last night’s win follows two previous nominations for Best Show by the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and marks the show’s 315th award over the course of its run, based on data from IMDb.

As for us, we’re glad to see Game of Thrones getting the appreciation it deserves. Even though the last season was controversial, to say the least, the show still stands out as one of the best TV series in recent memory, and it should be commemorated as such.
