'Game of Thrones' Theory Suggests Daenerys and Jon Are Actually Siblings

With three more days until the return of Game of Thrones, fans are trying to squeeze in any last minute shock-worthy theories about the upcoming season. One intriguing idea to grace our presence suggests that the romance between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen could actually take a page out of Cersei Lannister's book.

As if the fact that the pair are really nephew and aunt isn't wild enough, a theory reported by Refinery29 argues that Jon and Daenerys are actually brother and sister.

According to the publication, Digital Spy has pointed out that fans of George RR Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice book series—which inspired the HBO show—have found some inconsistencies with Daenerys' childhood. One detail where she says she grew up in Braavos with a lemon tree is the main source of a few raised eyebrows, as lemon trees don't grow in Braavos, but instead in Dorne. This has lead fans to believe that Daenerys didn't actually have the childhood she was told.

We know that Daenerys was taken into hiding as a child, but what if it was because her father was Rhaegar Targaryen instead of Aerys II? This, of course, would make Jon her brother.

Digital Spy also recalled an interview back in 2012 with Alfie Allen, who plays Theon Greyjoy in the series, in which he told Vulture: "You know, I asked [George] about who Jon Snow's real parents were, and he told me. I can't say who, but I can tell you that it involves a bit of a Luke Skywalker situation." This would fit the theory, as Luke and Leia from Star Wars were both taken into hiding and raised by separate families to protect their real heritage.

"Some other fun facts: Dany and Jon were born nine months apart, the same amount of time Ned was out of commission after the Tower of Joy," Refinery29 explains. "Plus, Ned has always been weirdly protective of Daenerys, warning against assassinating her in the first season. This theory could possibly answer a lot of these unexplained moments."

We don't think anything could shock us quite as much as finding out Dany and Jon are related, but as this is the final season of the beloved show, we can only expect things to get crazier. Game of Thrones returns this Sunday.
