'Game of Thrones' Theory Argues Gendry Will Ride Rhaegal in Final Season

One of the many, many predictions Game of Thrones fans have for the final season regards Kit Harington's character Jon Snow, and whether or not he'll ultimately ride a dragon. People have theorized by rewatching old episodes and analyzing every second of the promo footage for season eight that he will indeed ride Rhaegal, which is only fitting since he's named after Jon's real father, Rhaegar Targaryen.
Some fans are so certain Jon will ride a dragon, they believe the character was edited out of new teasers for the final season in which Drogon and Rhaegal are seen, in order not to spoil something so major.
Citadel of Crazytown: I'm pretty confident that in this shot of the dragons you can spot a tiny #Daenerys on #Drogon. I think the other shot comes right before. This in #JonSnow first fly on #Rhaegal they just erased him for this @StormofSpoilers @jowrotethis @Da7e @rejects pic.twitter.com/SbM4s9ITWA

But one fan on Reddit has a totally different idea, and believes Gendry, played by Joe Dempsie, will actually be the one to ride Rhaegal in the big battle of season eight.
User johnstonb believes the proof for this theory is in the new teasers, as they don't think something major like Jon riding the dragon would be hinted at as heavily as it's been. The Redditor points out:
"So, in the new trailers, we see Jon and Dany walking right up to the dragons and then the dragons flying. People think Jon is on Rhaegal flying and was simply edited out specifically for the trailer, so as not to 'confirm' anything. So if the show producers want to keep us guessing, why put in that scene of Jon walking up to the dragons in the first place and hint at it at all?"
In one of the newer teasers, we see Tyrion Lannister, Lord Varys, and Davos Seaworth looking up at something and seeming quite shocked. The fan argues that if they saw Jon on Rhaegal, they likely wouldn't be that surprised. There might be something even wilder up in the sky, and here's where the Gendry idea comes in. In that same scene, the characters are standing nearby tools and dragonglass. When we do see Gendry in the previews, he's making weapons at Winterfell. The theorist asks why the blacksmith wouldn't be in the clip next to Tyrion, Varys, and Davos if they were in his turf.
More possible evidence comes from clips of presumably the highly-anticipated battle, where Gendry is nowhere to be seen. Could it be because he's riding a dragon? "Gendry is a badass with that warhammer, but where is he?," the fan writes. "We have shots of every single one of the fighters doing their thing. Every. One….But not him."
On top of the trailer clues, many have believed Gendry will play a big part in the final season, as the Redditor points out in this post. "So Gendry vanished from the show for awhile and was finally brought back last season. Everyone knows that he must have an important part to play, but what?," they ask. It might be more than just being a helpful blacksmith.
If you're looking for more proof this could be a possibility, get ready for this. With George RR Martin's newest book Fire and Blood, which explains the history of the House Targaryen, it's revealed, according to Esquire, that Orys Baratheon "was a baseborn half-brother to Lord Aegon." In translation? Gendry has Targaryen blood in him. And if this is true, he could very well ride a dragon.

While fans have been sold on the idea Jon is destined to ride a dragon in the final season, things might not be so predictable (we're hoping they're not). We officially have a week and two days until Game of Thrones returns, so honestly, keep the theories coming.
