The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones caused a lot of confusion for fans, and therefore a lot of frustration. Many felt that the characters that we had loved, hated, and rooted for over the years had their arcs rushed by the showrunners by making hasty decisions.

One of these moments is when Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) embarks on his very short-lived affair with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) in the “The Last of the Starks.” After years of chemistry and emotions, the two finally spend the night together, only to have Jaime leave before the sunrise to return to his twin sister/lover, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).

Because of the abruptness of his exit, many fans assumed that he had planned to break Brienne’s heart all along, seducing her, taking her virginity, and heading back home with another notch on his belt. However, Digital Spy reports that the script gives a little more insight into the gold-handed knight.

The script reads, "Brienne sleeps the sleep of the happily drunk and devirginized. Jaime can't sleep, however. He just helped save the world. So why does he feel like a traitor?" This suggests that it wasn’t so much that he wanted to hurt Brienne as that he didn’t want to leave Cersei to die alone.

Truthfully, Jaime is a bit of a dog either way, but it is good to know where the writers’ heads were at.
