'Game of Thrones' Prequel Series Actor Appeared in Original Show's Unaired Pilot

After the first shoot of the Game of Thrones pilot back in summer 2010, the series' showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss understood a substantial amount of reshoots were necessary.

With that being the case, many characters were re-cast and actors ultimately lost their roles in the show. One actor who ultimately could not return to continue with the series was Jamie Campbell Bower.

Bower, who went on to play a young Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series, was slated for the role of Ser Waymar Royce — the Night's Watch ranger in charge of the mission that turns fatally wrong during the opening of the series' very-first episode.

In a blog post that summer, author George R.R. Martin explained Bower's filming for the short-lived Starz series Camelot coincided with GoT reshoots, and thus he wouldn't be able to reprise the role. But Martin left the door open for Bower's involvement in the future.

"And who knows, if 'Game of Thrones' should happen to have a longer run than 'Camelot,' maybe one day he can come back and play another (much larger) role for us," the acclaimed author wrote of Bower.

Turns out, Martin's prophecy was dead-on, as Bower was announced as one of the cast members for the untitled Game of Thrones prequel series, expected to debut sometime in 2020. Seems it was fate the actor would find a space in Westeros after all.

Thus far, HBO has only ordered a pilot episode to be filmed, but the company can order an entire season if that pilot is successful. Considering the success of GoT and how highly-anticipated the possible spinoffs are, we're sure we'll be seeing a full show here.

The prequel series will take place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones and will delve into the "world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour," according to HBO's official description for the show.
