If you were a fan of the fantasy series Game of Thrones, chances are you know how it ends and, like many viewers, found the conclusion fairly anticlimactic considering how many storylines had converged over the course of the show's eight seasons. Fans were so upset over the storytelling decisions made by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss that after the finale aired there was even a petition going around demanding that Season 8 be remade with "competent writers."

Several actors have spoken up about the backlash from fans after the series' end, and actress Carice van Houten has revealed her thoughts on the finale and the criticism it received. While speaking to Insider, van Houten, who played the sorceress Melisandre, actually enjoyed the ending. "I loved the ending. I loved the randomness of just picking a king," she said. "I loved the randomness and clumsiness of picking some guy, which is very representative of the world right now, as crazy people are ruling the world...I thought it was a great comparison." She went on to defend the show and said that fans were unhappy with the final because of how great previous seasons had been.

Good times

"So it feels a bit ungrateful," van Houten continued. "You've had such great times and then yeah, you're going to be disappointed because it's not going to go exactly how you anticipated. Of course, you're going to have all sorts of criticisms and I just thought it was a sign of how good the show was." As for the infamous petition, van Houten couldn't be bothered. "People sometimes take it too far and get too personal, but I can't take that seriously," she added. "That's beyond fandom. That's extremism. That's scary." Whether or not you liked the finale, van Houten is right that the first seven seasons were undeniably great, so fans might as well enjoy the content they have.
