James Gunn has been through a lot in the last few months. After success with the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films, he was fired from the third by Disney in July 2018 after offensive tweets he made years ago came to light. This caused him to make the jump to the DCEU, where he's writing and directing The Suicide Squad. But now, Gunn maybe be bridging the gap between the two powerhouse studios because Disney has reinstated him for Guardians 3.

Gunn is now the first director to helm films in the MCU and the DCEU around the same time. DC producer Peter Safran now thinks that having Gunn in this position could potentially unify the two franchises.

"And you know what I love about James directing for both Marvel and DC is he has always espoused the view that that which unites comic book and superhero lovers is much greater than that which divides us,” Safran told JoBlo. “Because, there’s always been this Marvel/DC rivalry, which he has said, and I agree, is absurd. There’s room for everybody and certainly that which unites us all is far greater than that which divides us, so hopefully they’ll see that you can be both a Marvel and a DC fan and the world won’t spin off its axis."

Safran also made a point that even though Gunn does have two movies under his wing right now, he won't be rushing them. The director will first film The Suicide Squad and then when he knows that it is completely finished, he will reportedly move on to Guardians 3.

The Suicide Squad is set to premiere in 2021.
