Chris Messina's Shocking Golden Globes Look Might Be for 'Birds of Prey' Role

Chris Messina shocked fans Sunday night when he stepped out onto the Golden Globes red carpet with a bleach blonde hairstyle.

Messina, who was there for his work on HBO’s Sharp Objects, confused fans with the change, but fans of DC Comics think they have an explanation for the change: Messina’s role as Victor Zsasz in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn).

Zsasz is a terrifying Gotham serial killer who celebrates each kill with a gruesome tally on his skin. While the character usually has a shaved head, he also sports a blonde head of hair in several appearances in the comics. In the upcoming film, Zsasz is expected to be working closely with Black Mask, who will be portrayed by Scottish actor Ewan McGregor.

Messina was announced as the pick for Zsasz in Birds of Prey only last month.

Fans on Twitter shared their shock and appreciation for the change in Messina's normal hairstyle last night.

And of course, many pointed out that the blonde hair must be for the DC role.

Birds of Prey will show Zsasz and Black Mask up against some of DC Comics’ female superheroes and supervillains.

Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn for the film, alongside Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.

The star-studded film is expected to hit theaters in Feb. 2020.
