Batman's Father Thomas Wayne Featured in First 'Joker' Trailer

Fans were treated with the first trailer for the new film Joker featuring Joaquin Phoenix this morning, and a shiver is still running up all of our spines. The movie looks like it might be the darkest DC movie ever--and that's saying something considering the late Heath Ledger's disturbing portrayal we've already seen in The Dark Knight. But Phoenix's introduction into the DC Universe isn't the only thing fans are discussing since the trailer dropped. We also get a glimpse of Batman's father, Thomas Wayne.

Amongst all the creepy imagery we see in the trailer, including a particularly weird scene where Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. the Joker, is bathing his mother, along with his emaciated body Phoenix no doubt had to really work at to achieve, we see a two-second clip of Wayne on a television.

Brett Cullen, who is playing Thomas Wayne, appears on the screen and is talking about the Joker and what is assumed as the train fight we see in another part of the trailer.

Wayne says, "Gotham's lost its way. What kind of coward would do something that cold blooded? Someone who hides behind a mask." The statement is ironic, of course, considering what his son will become when Wayne and his wife are killed.

We will have to wait and see if Wayne and the Fleck's paths cross in the film when Joker premieres October 4.
