'Aquaman' Director James Wan Wants to Take the Blame if Film Fails

Although the DC Extended Universe hasn't exactly gotten the highest of praise in recent years, for the exception of 2017's Wonder Woman, the upcoming Aquaman is actually getting fans hopeful for redemption. The film hits theaters this week on Dec. 21, and early reviews are pretty positive so far.

But just in case the film comes out and bombs, director James Wan is ready to take the blame.

While talking to The New York Times, the 41-year-old director spoke about making the film, particularly on how much creative liberty he had. Pointing out that he hadn't had this much freedom on his previous films, Wan shared:

"It’s pretty crazy. For as big a movie as Aquaman is, I could not have had more freedom. I had all the big tools and the budget to paint on a really big canvas, but with the freedom I had on, let’s say, Saw or Insidious. So if the movie works, or doesn’t work, I have no one to blame but myself."

No matter how Aquaman is received, it seems we won't know for some time if Wan will helm the next in the series, if there is a sequel. This is because the director himself doesn't even know his future in the DCEU. "This is my only one that I’ve signed up to do, so we’ll see," Wan said at the Hollywood premiere of the film. "Let’s not talk about a sequel before this one’s even come out yet!"

Whether or not Wan helms a sequel, we know star Jason Momoa will be pushing for one. He's even pitched ideas for the potential second film to Warner Bros., explaining in October, "Even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome...But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2."

Let's hope for everyone's sake that Aquaman pulls through.
