Netflix's The Queen's Gambit made Anya Taylor-Joy a household name and a highly sought-after actress in the industry. But life was not always so easy for the ethereal beauty, as she revealed on The Drew Barrymore show this week.

The 26-year-old Elvin beauty, who is plugging her film The Menu with Ralph Fiennes, said that as a child, she was criticized for her looks: she is slender and 5ft8in so Anya tends to attract the eye.

The conversation began when host Drew Barrymore said, "I heard you weren’t always embraced at school."

To which Anya responded, "I was very, very lucky with my parents because when I was bullied for my looks my mom always said you look at the inside of somebody."

"You look at the inside of somebody you don’t look at class, you don’t look at anything like that." Before proceeding to give her mom a shout out.

"You don’t look at what they do for a job, it’s just do you like that person’s heart? And I really have to give a big shout-out to my mom for that because it was really helpful."
