Anthony Mackie Opens Up on Significance of Becoming Captain America as a Black Man

A new chapter has begun for The Falcon actor Anthony Mackie. As you know, he was gifted Captain America’s shield at the moving end of Avengers: Endgame, and will now take on the role of the nation's favorite hero after Chris Evans. Though it is an exciting new endeavor for the actor full of brand new opportunities, Mackie is also very emotional about the responsibility.
ComicBook.com reports that the 41-year-old actor recently sat down with Deadline to promote his upcoming projects, Seberg and The Banker. The interview, he was asked how he is feeling about being the new Captain America, to which he explained:
“You know what, to be honest, it’s very emotional. I’ve been in the business for 20 years and I’ve been fortunate to do some amazing stuff and work with amazing people. For me, to be a Black man in 2019 and be given the helm of Captain America with the history of Black men in this country is a monumental step, not only in entertainment, but also in my life. It’s been extremely emotional. Look, my grandfather was a sharecropper, you know what I mean? There’s a lot of history and pain and triumph and joy that comes along with me being Captain America.”
We'll get to see Mackie in the MCU next with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a television series created for Disney+ by Malcolm Spellman. Fans are excited to see what the Point Blank star will bring to the role. One thing is for sure, no one is more deserving of the beloved title!
