As if the New Year wasn’t exciting enough, now we have one more thing to look forward to. IGN reports that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has lined up a director for the next Star Wars movie, and that the studio will be announcing who it is in Jan. 2020.

The as-yet-untitled Star Wars movie is on deck for 2022. Though little is known about the plot, Kennedy did confirm that the film will not be part of Rian Johnson's new trilogy. It is also unclear if the film will be a continuation of the project that was set to be headed by Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, or if it is an entirely new endeavor.

The GoT duo was locked in to spearhead the next trilogy with the Disney franchise, but recently backed out. The pair received intense criticism for the move, especially following their controversial finale of their hard-hitting HBO series.

Lucasfilm couldn’t reveal much more than the fact that there is, indeed, a director in the works. With The Rise of Skywalker coming out on Dec. 20, the studio wants all attention to be directed to the upcoming film, which will end the 42-year-old Skywalker Saga.

It is exciting to know that a new generation of Star Wars movies are on the horizon!
