It won't be until 2022 that fans will be able to dive deeper into the uncharted territories of Aquaman's world. Doesn't that seem like such a long time away? With how successful the underwater film was, you'd think they'd be releasing one every year. But Aquaman's producer has a good reason why fans have to wait three years a sequel.

The reason Peter Safran gives for the long due date should put fans' minds at ease, even if it will be a long separation. The reason he gives is simply that they want to do it right. The want to make the best possible movie they can, and even go beyond the success of Aquaman.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Safran explains they don't want to rush the film in any way and take their time doing it. The discussion ultimately came down to the head of DC films Walter Hamada and director James Wan.

"[Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: you want to do it right," Safran says. "You don't want to do it fast. You just want to do it right."

Their plan is basically to adopt the model most franchises are using today, which would be to release a blockbuster hit every three years or so, and then release a spin-off movie or television show in between to keep fans immersed in the world.

In the case of the DCEU, a spin-off horror movie called The Trench was recently announced.

Fans can expect to see Aquaman 2 on Dec. 16, 2022.
