R&B singer Kelis and rapper Nas were once a power couple of sorts. They were married after a two-year relationship, and stayed together for five years after. When Kelis filed for divorce on April 30, 2009, she cited "irreconcilable differences."
Now, almost exactly nine years later, Kelis has opened up on the nature of their relationship leading up to their divorce, which apparently included a lot of "mental and physical abuse."
Speaking with Hollywood Unlocked, over the course of their hour-long video interview, Kelis details their marriage as "really dark," with lots of drinking and "getting high a lot."
When interviewer Jason lee asked her if Nas was ever abusive, Kelis remarked, "
"I’m not weak but I’m really private. I don’t like people knowing my business," Kelis continued. "I felt like, ‘This is my partner. I chose this. We’re gonna do this, we’re gonna make it work.’”
