When Darren Aronofsky's 2017 thriller Mother! was released, viewers were just confused. The film became extremely divisive, with some calling it a masterpiece and others finding it straight up terrible.
The film stars Aronofsky's then-girlfriend Jennifer Lawrence, who later revealed the backlash the film faced contributed to their breakup. The two hadn't really talked about what went wrong with the film, or what those who hated it were missing. Well now, Aronofsky is talking.
At the SXSW Film Festival this past weekend, Aronofsky explained, "I wanted to make a film about Mother Earth and how we treat Mother Earth."
"I see the way we treat Mother Earth as incredibly disrespectful. We pillage her, we rape her, we call her dirt. That's why Jennifer played the character the way she did. There's a lot of emotion," he said.
The 49-year-old also went on to say he was apart of the film, as he is with every movie he makes. "I'm in every one of my films. I'm the wrestler. I'm the ballet dancer," he said, adding, "Both Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem's character. I'm every character in every movie."
This was kind of more or less what we thought the movie was going for. Unfortunately, it was an overall flop, even leading the nominees at the 2018 Razzie Awards, which recognize the worst films of the year.
Hopefully this taught JLaw not to date her directors! Just kidding, she can date whoever she wants.
