Sunday’s Golden Globes were a source of dissonance against social issues plaguing Hollywood and the rest of the country. But the stars also critiqued the harsh state of affairs in the White House in other Hollywood events throughout the week.

None of these words rang louder than the speech given by Robert De Niro at the National Board of Review awards gala Tuesday night. De Niro is an outspoken critic of Trump, and this is the next criticism in a long string. His remarks came at the beginning of a speech announcing Meryl Streep’s award for her role in The Post.

De Niro, according to a New York Times transcript, said: “…Today the world is suffering from the real Donald Trump. Come on. You know. What are we talking about? This f---ing idiot is the president. It’s the Emperor’s New Clothes – the guy is a f---ing fool.”

The actor also compared the current presidency to that of Richard Nixon in terms of its broad scope of surveillance and blatant disregard for the welfare of proper journalism. Other stars subtlety addressed the issue, among them director Steven Spielberg.
