Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't just the first of two consecutive Marvel films to feature a female lead in the title, but it's also the third MCU film in 2018 to surpass $160 million in domestic and international box office numbers.

With $76 million domestic and $85 million international, Variety reports Ant-Man and the Wasp opened to $161 million worldwide, ahead of Ant-Man's $113.6 million and even Guardian of the Galaxy's $160 million.

Just to showcase the recent success of Marvel films, besides Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War (boasting $1.3 billion and $2 billion respectively worldwide), DC's Justice League from 2016, aiming to compete with Marvel's The Avengers by showcasing a roster of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and the Flash, opened domestically just under $18 million higher than Ant-Man and the Wasp.

“We are really thrilled about the results,” Disney's head of domestic distribution Cathleen Taff told Variety. “We continue to be amazed by what [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige and the team do with these films.” The sequel to Ant-Man reportedly had a budget of "around" $162 million, made back by its worldwide opening box office numbers. Even more, Ant-Man and the Wasp has yet to open in the UK, Germany, Japan, India, and China, held off until after the 2018 World Cup.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is currently playing in theaters, and it's the last MCU film in 2018 until Captain Marvel on March 8th, 2019.
